The growing expansion of commercial space operations will bring exciting opportunities for both the public and private sectors. And yet, conflicts will also emerge from these opportunities. Beyond recent dramatizations of commercial and political disputes in space, satellites already impact astronomy and science. The resolution of these present and future issues will depend on the application of domestic and international space law. Existing for more than 60 years, space law remains largely esoteric and arguably underdeveloped to adequately address the challenges of a space-faring world. This primer on space law will discuss its jurisdictional scope and conflicts; shed light on existing disputes and potential resolutions; highlight near and far term issues; and outline a construct to help define the future of space for generations to come.
