Presenters

Harry Perper, Principal Cybersecurity Technologist at The MITRE Corporation
Phyllis Lee, Senior Director of Controls at the Center for Internet Security (CIS)
Lawrence Cruciana, President at Corporate Information Technologies

This session is a panel discussion of recommendations for enhancing the cybersecurity posture for state, local and other governments, and small/mid-sized businesses. The recommendations are based on an analysis of the cybersecurity posture of a wide range of SMBs and government organizations.

About Our Speakers

Harry Perper is a Principal Cybersecurity Technologist at The MITRE Corporation. In his role Harry contributes his expertise to multiple projects including technology research and critical infrastructure cybersecurity guidance. Harry led teams at the NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, creating reference architectures and example implementations for the energy and financial sectors. He has also led teams evaluating a range of cybersecurity technologies. He is a frequent speaker at cybersecurity events, including RSAC, GridSecCon, ProtectOurPower, and FS-ISAC.  Prior to joining MITRE, Harry worked in the telecommunications industry in various capacities including operations, engineering, and marketing.  MITRE operates 7 federally funded research and development centers (FFRDC). MITRE’s support to the FFRDC sponsors includes systems engineering, cybersecurity solution recommendations, acquisition planning, and independent test and evaluation expertise.  Education: Electrical Engineering, MSEE, George Washington University; /  BSEE, University of Maryland

Phyllis Lee is the Senior Director of Controls at the Center for Internet Security (CIS). She has over 25 years of experience in information assurance and has performed vulnerability assessments, virtualization research and worked in security automation. Prior to joining CIS, Lee worked at the National Security Agency (NSA) focusing on the intersection between malware and virtualization, which included collaboration with MIT Lincoln Labs. Lee also participated in a variety of security automation standardization efforts and led the security automation strategy for the NSA Information Assurance Directorate (IAD). She graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Master of Science in Computer Science.

Lawrence has over 25 years of Information Technology (IT) experience in some of the most sensitive compartmentalized, classified, and regulated enterprise businesses. Seeing the huge operational and security gaps which exist between enterprise and mid-market companies, he evolved and has focused much of his career in this space. He’s built and run a successful regional as a Managed IT Services Provider (“MSP”) that serves mid-market and enterprise organizations alike. As an experienced cybersecurity practitioner, Lawrence has designed and implemented hundreds of cybersecurity programs incorporating key control frameworks including NIST Cyber Security Framework and CIS Controls (20 CSC). While an Electrical Engineer and Physicist by training, he found the application of scientific principles had a place within the field of IT.

He founded Corporate Information Technologies (www.corp-infotech.com), a security-centric managed technology firm. While very committed to delivering exceptional outcomes using technology, Lawrence’s passion is in stopping the attack and exploitation of Small Businesses by cybercriminals. His efforts in this area are reflected in his contributions in the numerous publications, media appearances, speaking engagements, and co-authorships of technical standards. Lawrence literally helped write the book on how Managed Services Providers (MSPs) should secure both their own and their customer’s technology systems. He has been a featured presenter at numerous conferences including the RSA Conference, ISSA International Summits, and numerous industry-specific events in the manufacturing, financial, and banking sectors.

Lawrence is committed to helping develop the next generation of technologists and engineers. In 2010, he founded a program teaching middle school students the basics of computer system engineering and design. That program evolved and now teaches the next generation of “White Hat” hackers – middle school students at McClintock Middle School. Because of these achievements and continued commitments to his local community, in 2017, the Charlotte Business Journal recognized Lawrence as one of Charlotte, NC’s 40 under 40 most influential business leaders. If you want to get Lawrence talking, bring up SCUBA Diving, how cybersecurity affected your business, or a book by your favorite author.
